Tower Renewal Summit 4 - November 9+10, 2010

John Woelfling, from Dattner Architects, New York, joined us for our fourth Tower renewal summit in Edmonton and Calgary. In this pair of luncheons, Woelfling brought us insight into managing the Peter W. Rodino Federal Office Building renewal in Newark, New Jersey.

JOHN WOELFLING'S BIO

John Woelfling AIA, LEED AP, Principal, has been with Dattner Architectssince 1997 and has directed a variety of project types, including infrastructure, institutional, recreational and healthcare facilities. He is Managing Principal of the new Battery Park City Parks Conservancy Maintenance Facility, PS/IS 276 (also in Battery Park City), and Ray and Joan Kroc Community Centre on Staten Island for The Salvation Army. He is also the Project Manager for the Peter W. Rodino Federal Office Building Modernization. John was the Managing Principal for the master plan and subsequent renovations to the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and the adjoining Pier 86, the McBurney YMCA, and the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Centre Master Plan and Emergency Room Expansion. John holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Tower Renewal Summit 3 - April 21+22, 2010

Sara Beardsley, Architect of the greening of the Sears Tower spoke at the third Reimagine Tower Renewal Summit in Calgary, at the Water Centre, April 21, 2010 and in Edmonton at the hotel MacDonald on April 22, 2010. In this pair of luncheons, Beardsley presented some of the strategies being implemented in the new Willis Tower project that aim to reduce heating energy consumption by up to 50% and earn the building LEED® Gold certification.

SARA BEARDSLEY'S BIO

Sara Beardsley is a Senior Architect with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture in Chicago. She is currently leading design efforts on AS+GG’s modernization and greening of Sears Tower, a role for which she’s uniquely suited given her lifelong appreciation for Chicago’s architectural tradition and her commitment to sustainability in the built environment.

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Sara is interested in historic preservation and engineering, and has a special fascination with the design of tall buildings. Among her current projects at AS+GG is a supertall hotel tower for a confidential development in Dubai. Before joining AS+GG in 2007, Sara was a studio head and technical coordinator at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. There she collaborated with Adrian Smith on the design of the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago, and was also involved in the renovation of Mies van der Rohe’s Dirksen Federal Building.

Our second Reimagine Summit, with guest speaker Leanne Tobias, nationally renowned sustainable real estate consultant from Washington D.C. focused on the business of commercial real estate, and how sustainable strategies for reimagining buildings can increase property value and lower operational costs.

LEANNE TOBIAS'S BIO

Leanne Tobias is managing principal and founder of Malachite LLC,www.malachitellc.com, an advisory firm that specializes in sustainable or green real estate on a global basis. Services provided by Malachite LLC include green real estate investment, finance, management and certification support for funds, property owners and policy makers. Her new book, Retrofitting Office Buildings to be Green and Energy-Efficient, examines green office renovation throughout the globe.

Leanne brings over 20 years of institutional real estate investment, development and management experience to the sustainable real estate field, and is one of the few real estate investment experts who has been designated a LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council.  She is a sought-after international speaker; an advisor to the Green Building Finance Consortium, to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Finance Advisory Board, and to Washington, D.C.’s Green Building Task Force.

Leanne was previously managing director of the Multi-Employer Property Trust, a $3.1 billion commercial real estate equity fund, and headed the real estate operations of the AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust.  She also directed programs for capital markets lenders, banks, pension funds and life insurance companies at the Mortgage Bankers Association.  

Leanne holds an MBA from Wharton Business School and a Master’s in Public Affairs degree from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.


Tower Renewal Summit 1 - April 27, 2009

This summit is the first of a series of luncheons that focus on the critical importance and value of re-skinning commercial office buildings to save energy and enhance cities.

His Worship David Miller, Mayor of Toronto, has launched a new campaign on Tower Renewal and will join us on April 27 as he presents this campaign in Alberta. Described by the Globe and Mail as “the most exciting initiative to emerge in a generation.” This is a great opportunity to learn more about how we can reimagine the future of Alberta’s office towers.

DAVID MILLER'S BIO

David Miller was a partner at Toronto law firm Aird & Berlis before becoming a Metro councillor in 1994. In 1997 he was elected to the new City of Toronto council where he served two terms.

Torontonians chose David Miller as their new mayor in November 2003. He was re-elected in November 2006 with a mandate to make Toronto a city of prosperity, livability and opportunity for all.

Among his proudest accomplishments is securing a New Deal for Cities. This has enabled Toronto to get new powers, money, and respect from the provincial and federal governments. Mayor Miller has also become a vocal champion for the national urban agenda.

As Toronto’s government matures, the City is reinvesting in its neighbourhoods with initiatives like the Mayor’s Community Safety Plan, the Clean and Beautiful City program,waterfront revitalization and the Mayor’s Tower Renewal project. This is leading to real change that has inspired a new sense of civic pride and, responsibility among Torontonians.

Mayor David Miller’s role in leading the Toronto’s environmental agenda was recognized by the influential C40 Group which last year appointed him as its Chair. The C40 Group’s membership includes such major world cities as Athens, Berlin, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Sao Paulo, Seoul and Tokyo. The organization was set up in London in 2005 with the aim to accelerate cities’ programs to combat climate change.
