Reciprocity is a relationship, an exchange, a promise fulfilled. Indigenous knowledge systems centre this relationality where land, water, plants, animals, ancestors, and future generations are kin. Reciprocity then is governance in motion, a way to keep these relationships in balance. Reciprocity by Design is part of a broader strategy for sovereignty and self-sufficiency. It is about the agency of architecture in the space of Indigenous tourism so destinations can thrive while relationships, culture, and ecosystems deepen.
Interwoven with vignettes of architectural interventions focused on themes that bring reciprocity to fruition, this book is our offering of framework, insights, and questions to seek out and unlock the space of abundance: the overlap where land, culture, and the visitor economy build into one another, where learning is shared, regenerative, and non-extractive, and where value circulates locally. We write this book with humility, as collaborators invited into this work, committed to utilizing architectural strategies to help communities expand that space of abundance and thrive on their own terms.
