Project Sectors
HISTORY
Blue Lake Centre has long been an important cultural landscape. In 2019, the Centre was leased to Yellowhead Tribal College and used as a land-based teaching site for the College's students and Elders.
VISION
The vision is to enrich this important site and develop a cultural education centre for the Yellowhead Tribal Council Elders and Youth, to create opportunities through education, inter-generational learning, and community engagement. Yellowhead Tribal College's vision is to transform the existing Blue Lake Centre to become a fully integrative and supportive place for Indigenous families to heal, to remember, to learn, and to create a thriving future for generations to come. The space will be sustainable for both its people and the land, using natural, locally-sourced materials, passive heating and cooling strategies, and thoughtful landscaping to preserve the site and surrounding natural environment.
HEALING THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
Both indoor spaces and outdoor places will be explored in the aim of providing solutions-based healing to the Blue Lake community members. Students and visitors will have the opportunity to take part in land-based learning activities, such as trapping, fishing, plant medicines and berry picking. There will also be access to emotional and spiritual supports, such as on-site therapists and psychologists, traditional and Elder's teachings, and ceremonies and crafting. Outdoor activities include guided kayaking, swimming, hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing and other healing opportunities, such as gardening and animal care. The Centre will provide a safe and comfortable home, with meals and housekeeping provided.
