HISTORY
In September 2022, Reimagine Architects awarded the inaugural Salmon Award for Architecture to Ndazkoh First Nation. In collaboration with Lees + Associates Landscape Architects, $20,000 worth of Planning and Design Services was awarded to envision and create a master plan for a Cultural Site
at Stump Lake. The design team traveled to Ndazkoh in April 2023 to learn about the land, culture, and to facilitate a workshop to understand the vision for the project.
VISION
The Stump Lake Cultural Site is an opportunity for the community to create cultural, historical, and spiritual connections in on the traditional lands of the Ndazkoh people. This project envisions the land on the east shore of Stump Lake in Ndazkoh Nation as the future grounds for a new cultural site. The masterplan and functional programming of the future Stump Lake Cultural Site was developed with community members to further support the collective vision to create a holistic, safe, united community by using a cultural approach to build an economically viable and sustainable future.
BRIDGING HISTORY WITH THE FUTURE
The working group, which included Chief Leah Stump, Council members, community members, and the design team, then developed a vision of what the Stump Lake Cultural Site could look like. Factors such as the location of different programs, program adjacencies, sun, wind, access, egress, parking,
privacy, views and other site-related issues to help determine the location and orientation of the different programs. This workshop also investigated the larger land based considerations, such a remediation of the waterways to traditional alignments, existing buildings, and how new programs can integrate into the larger community.
