HISTORY
Saddle Lake is a Cree Nation located in Central Alberta, about 180 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. Dedicated to the wellbeing and health of their community, the Nation council consulted our team with the idea of creating a centre that would serve as a primary point of care for their Nation members.
VISION
The Healing Centre provides care that merges contemporary medical principles with traditional Cree healing practices. This holistic space responds with compassion and commitment to the specific needs of the Saddle Lake community, which include alcohol and drug addiction rehabilitation, suicide prevention, and counselling programs. The on-site care provided within the Centre supports the Nation in their vision of self-sufficiency and independence.
HEALING FOR THE FUTURE
A primary objective of our design of the Saddle Lake Healing Centre was to make the building as efficient and self-sustaining as possible. The Centre will last long into the future, and demands only minor repairs that can be completed largely by Nation members. The Centre embodies the Nation’s principles of healing and compassion in its materials, which are low-maintenance, natural, and kind to the earth. The Healing Centre is the first phase of a greater strategy to offer long-term care to its members; small residences will be incorporated within the site, which will serve patients and visitors requiring longer treatment periods.
