Project Sectors
HISTORY
The city of Grande Prairie was rapidly expanding in population size, resulting in infrastructure and housing pressures. Many residents were unable to find and afford accommodations--thus the idea emerged for a cost-effective, healthy, and comfortable housing unit.
VISION
The Hearthstone project responds with style and economy to an essential need for barrier-free, safe, and comfortable housing. The project demonstrates the capacity for exceptional design and innovation even within the constraints of a limited budget.
INTEGRITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
The environmental initiatives in this 40-unit housing complex were not compromised by the small budget. Rather, the design marries sustainability and economy to create a beautiful and pleasant living space. Sustainable measures include reduced energy consumption through the use of a high-efficiency heating system, building orientation to maximize daylight while shielding from solar gain and glare, optimal insulation, low-flow fixtures and the use of locally sourced and recycled materials. Units are flexible in their programming with knock-out panels between rooms to allow for greater space, or greater privacy, as each tenant requires.
