HISTORY

Kehewin Cree Nation is located 20 km south of Bonnyville, Alberta on Kehewin #123, which is within Treaty 6 territory. Its proximity to the nearest service centre is 50 km and has year-round road access, though roads within the community can become inaccessible at times of heavy precipitation. With the recent addition of the new K-12 Community Education Centre, the community has grown and is expected to expand well into the future.

VISION

The Kehewin Masterplan is a comprehensive design strategy that not only realizes the potential of the community’s existing buildings, but that offers new spaces and services to accommodate the needs and growth of the Kehewin population. The Nation’s progressive and holistic worldview and their dedication to the success of their members are reflected in the design for the community Masterplan, which includes public works, housing, health services, child and family services, income support services, and multiple education services. Our collaborative re-imagining is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the Kehewin community. By investing in the community today, we safeguard its future.

FOR NOW AND THE FUTURE OF KEHEWIN

Working in creative collaboration with our stakeholders, we conceived of a vision for the Kehewin Nation that supports the resiliency and sovereignty of the community. The master plan re-purposes existing underutilized buildings, a strategy initiated by the design and construction of the new K-12 Education Centre. With a focus on renovations to suit new programs in existing buildings, as well as adding new infrastructure, this regenerative approach encourages economic development and better enables supportive services for social, mental, and physical health. As the first Nation to build and operate its own on-reserve school in Canada, our design continues the Kehewin legacy of self-governance and optimism.
