BACKGROUND

Maskwa Medical Center (MMC) is a not-for-profit bringing transformative change to health care in Northern Alberta by improving access to medical specialists and services. Their new facility will offer a broad range of medical specialists, retail services and an academic training clinic. Together, these offerings will facilitate easy, comprehensive access to health care for the people of Northern Alberta. This innovative diagnostics clinic is the first of its kind in Canada and it is inspired by the Mayo Clinic model, which is well established in the US.

THE BUILDING

Maskwa Medical Center will span 3 storeys, with an underground parkade and a second-floor terrace for a future daycare. The design team provided additional capacity for a potential fourth floor for future expansion, as well as a potential pedway link to the nearby Regional Hospital. The third storey will house the Maskwa Medical Specialist Clinic, the second storey will have a range of retail tenants including a 24/7 daycare and a restaurant, and the main floor is where the University of Alberta teaching clinic will be located. This innovative clinic will work in tandem with Alberta Health Services, integrating with its most prominent neighbour – the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

SUSTAINABILITY

Maskwa Medical Centre is a highly energy-efficient building, incorporating green building technologies while adhering to the latest healthy building practices. The building is predominantly designed with mass timber, featuring exposed wooden finishes wherever possible. In addition, all interior finishes in the building are designed to offer excellent indoor environmental quality.
