VISION
Reimagine Architects worked with Keyano College to transform a series of campus spaces through an Indigenous lens, creating places that reflect culture, belonging, and reconciliation. The project underscores the importance of building environments where Indigenous students feel seen and supported, and where non-Indigenous students can learn and connect through shared experiences.
SCOPE
The multi-phase project reimagines various spaces across campus to support traditional teachings and community-building activities such as smudging, feasts, sewing, beading, and moccasin-making, integrated into everyday student life. Phase 1, which has been completed, revitalized the Study Lounge and main floor lockers, converting them into a warm, multipurpose space that quickly became a gathering place for students.
ENGAGEMENT
This project was guided by listening. Engagement sessions with Indigenous students and staff at the Indigenous Student Centre set the tone, followed by surveys and hands-on design workshops. Students described what mattered most: calm, welcoming spaces that held space for both quiet reflection and community celebration. Their voices shaped every decision, from textures and finishes to how rooms were laid out. Throughout the process, we layered meaning into the design through culturally resonant materials and finishes, ensuring the space could adapt to a variety of uses while staying authentic to Indigenous identity.
