Project Sectors

kisihtoskatonaw is a welcoming and inclusive space for Métis artists to gather, collaborate, and strengthen the Métis art community. This craft & marketplace provides support to Métis artisans so they can practice their work full time and offers a place to sell their work.

VISION

kisihtoskatonaw responds to a resolution passed by the Métis Nation of Alberta to support Métis artists. By creating a space that removes isolation barriers and facilitates the varied work that Métis artists do, kisihtoskatonaw allows for generational growth, and raises the profile and recognition of artists: all in a space that feels like it was made for Métis people.

LOCATION + PROGRAMME

kisihtoskatonaw is located in the heart of downtown Edmonton, occupying 135 square metres of leased ground-level space in Renaissance Tower which is situated on 95 Street between 104 Avenue and 105 Avenue.

Its programme includes a lounge area, reception & display, a retail and workshop space, a private office, and kitchen and washroom facilities for staff.

A MÉTIS FEELING

The finishes inside kisihtoskatonaw are meant to evoke and celebrate a sense of Métis culture: they are warm, inviting and durable, to boot! A cozy palette featuring lots of wood helps to suggest connection to nature. Custom plywood millwork was created to further this natural palette; and the millwork components are interchangeable and modular, allowing the client to re-shape their space whenever they like. Shelves turn into rolling storage benches, while shelving units can be adjusted to display any configuration of artwork.

The design team commissioned items from Métis artists to help bring the space to life, including a striking coloured glass lamp, custom coffee table and cushions for the sofa chairs.
