HISTORY

The area of Yellowknife has a beautiful, if demanding, natural environment. The Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) required a building that would not only be well-integrated with its surroundings and climate but that would provide a comfortable and efficient workspace for its department staff and visitors.

VISION

The Yellowknife Government of Northwest Territories Office is sustainable, comfortable, and reflective of Yellowknife’s unique cultural character. The site is narrow, so the Office is necessarily compact and highly efficient in its space and energy use, boasting numerous sustainable technologies and innovations. The building’s colourful and vibrant exterior brightens Yellowknife’s dark winter landscape and speaks to the irrepressible, buoyant spirit of the people of Northwest Territories.

THE GREEN COMMITMENT OF THE GNWT

In alignment with the GNWT’s mandate for energy efficient buildings and low operating costs, the tower boasts many efficient features including high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, heat recovery ventilation systems, direct digital controls, and high performance electric lighting. Its innovative biomass heating system connects to several of the neighbouring buildings, displacing approximately 274,000 litres of heating oil and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 785 tonnes every year.
