HISTORY
Amii, one of Canada's preeminent centres of artificial intelligence that bridges research and industry, hired Reimagine and Sustainable Buildings Consortium (SBC) to transform a former engineering office into a vibrant space for events and researcher and student co-working. The new Amii Hub offers researchers an exciting, cutting-edge, and comfortable workspace, while revitalizing Edmonton's downtown core, and celebrating Edmonton's leadership in Artificial Intelligence.
VISION
The new Amii space is designed as a love letter to Edmonton. The project re-energizes the downtown neighbourhood and spotlights Edmonton's rapidly growing role in the artificial intelligence industry. Beloved Edmonton neighbourhoods are highlighted in the design, featuring such iconic areas as Old Strathcona, Hawrelak Park, and Borden Park. The unique aesthetic of the Hub serves as a beautiful backdrop to the innovation and cutting-edge technologies offered by the space.
MERGING CHARACTER AND INNOVATION
Working closely with Amii we co-created a space that is colourful, cheeky, playful and highly functional Hub. It invites the many international visitors to the City to engage with Artifical Intelligence in a place that might surprise them. The social spaces and café are inspired by the warm, vintage materials of Old Strathcona, the watery blues and sinuous shapes of the event space pay homage to Hawrelak Park, the offices and towers of Downtown are represented in the coworking spaces, while the colourful dichromic Borden Park can be found in the quiet concentration nook.
THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP
Our team managed the project collaboratively with the trades on-site, coordinated deliveries of supplies and furniture, and facilitated discussions between trades, suppliers, authorities having jurisdiction, the client, and the building management. The "Phase 1" event space was successfully granted temporary partial occupancy after just one month of construction, in time for Edmonton's AI Week, to celebrate Amii's 20th anniversary.
The balance of the space was completed by the time University started in the fall, to welcome both local and visiting AI researchers and their industry collaborators.
We're excited to be a part of Amii's growth as a research and technology giant as we take on more projects in Edmonton--and beyond!
