HISTORY
The Strathcona County Museum & Archives was brought to life by a group of dedicated volunteers who, in 1997, opened their doors to the public. Their building, Sherwood Park's original Fire Hall, was built in 1959. Over 25 years later, the Strathcona County Museum & Archives – locally referred to as Strathma – is on its way to becoming a keystone institution in the county. Exhibitions, programs, public events, workshops, and online initiatives provide access to the collection's content for thousands of individuals each year.
CHALLENGE
Although it emerged as a grassroots initiative, Strathma has come into its own, and is now poised to serve the community with the full services expected and required of a Museum. Its leadership recognizes this as a good time to map out a strategy for the path forward, in tandem with increased growth and the development of Sherwood Park's urban centre. Reimagine was engaged by Strathcona County to help envision what Strathma's future could look like, and most importantly, how to get there.
THE STUDY
Reimagine considered two recent planning studies that Strathcona County & Strathma had undertaken between 2018-2021 and built upon this work with comprehensive engagement sessions to explore the possibility of a new or newly-expanded space for Strathma to grow into, and map out all of the work that must be done to facilitate this change. The resulting feasibility study serves as a road map for the future of the Strathcona County Museum & Archives.
