Work: First Nation & Metis
Since the 1980’s, we have collaborated with First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and urban Indigenous communities and have given rise to a transparent and deeply respectful design process that is rooted in the interconnectedness of people, nature, and life. We have most recently connected with Indigenous communities in the Edmonton area to co-create Canada’s first urban Indigenous spiritual site, Kihciy Askiy. Our experience co-creating with communities spans myriad Treaty areas, including Treaty 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9, as well as communities across northern Canada, including Métis Crossing, the Lubicon Lake Band, Saddle Lake, Kehewin, Frog Lake, Kwanlin Dun First Nation, and Salt River First Nation, among others. We design schools, health and healing centres, cultural and gathering hubs, memorials, and lodgings that uniquely suit each climate and cultural context. Our design process invites Elders, youth and leadership to share in the development and success of each project, creating opportunities for contribution and maximizing the engagement of local workers, trades, and materials producers, to bring to life projects that are regenerative for the earth and its communities.
